8 Unbelievable Tips for Aching Feet

So you’ve tried over the counter pain relief, you’ve applied topical creams and have had plenty of massages, yet nothing is helping cure the pain in your feet. Although it can depend on the injury and how much pain your feet are in, there are plenty of remedies you can try to see which works for you.

No one solution will remedy everything for everybody. Everyone has different reasons for aching feet, so it’s worth speaking to your doctor as well. If you want to try something right away, here are eight unbelievable tips for aching feet.

  1. Draw an Epsom Salt Bath
  2. Wear Night Splints
  3. Try Out Cold Therapy Socks
  4. Hydrate Your Feet
  5. Put on Compression Socks
  6. Increase Fluid Intake
  7. Do Strength Exercises
  8. Switch Your Footwear

1. Draw an Epsom Salt Bath

A warm foot bath can help alleviate aching feet. By adding Epsom salts, it can help with sore muscles and reduce swelling in your feet. If you want to try something different, baking soda works as well but is usually for skin-related conditions. You can make this type of bath by adding one cup of Epsom salts to a tub of warm water, then soak your feet in this mixture for around 20 minutes.

2. Wear Night Splints

You can help your aching feet even when you’re asleep. Night splints keep your feet locked into one position overnight so you don’t sleep with your feet pointing - a common cause of foot pain. Night splints are something you can buy once and re-use when necessary with people using them to treat plantar fasciitis, a common foot condition affecting the heel.

Night socks can also keep the feet in a neutral position while offering a gentle stretch to the muscles.

3. Try Out Cold Therapy Socks

If you regularly use an icepack on your feet at the end of a day, try out cold therapy socks instead. They have sleeves made for specially-designed gel packs in the toe, heel and bottom so you can get ice therapy wherever you need it on your feet.

4. Hydrate Your Feet

There are so many home remedies you can try on your feet which use different ingredients, but they all involve keeping your feet hydrated. It can be anything from applying lotion to soaking in a magnesium/sulfate salt bath to stop your feet from getting dry or even drops of lavender, rosemary and eucalyptus essential oils.

To help relieve the pain even more, warm up your lotion for a minute or two in the microwave, remove the cup and place your lotion bottle in it. You can also wrap your feet in warm towels by rinsing it in the sink, warming for around 30 seconds and gently wrapping it around your feet.

5. Put on Compression Socks

Compression socks can help the blood move up out of your feet, preventing lower leg and ankle swelling. These types of socks support and eliminate the throbbing and painful aches. When you try them on, make sure they’re comfortable and don’t irritate or bruise your skin, as these are signs the compression level is too tight so will need adjusting.

6. Increase Fluid Intake

Excess salt in the body can cause swelling so it’s important to flush that out where you can. If eight to 10 glasses of water don’t suit you, add a little flavour with lemon and cucumber slices. The anti-inflammatory agents in these ingredients help battle the swelling and ultimately the aching feet you suffer from.

7. Do Strength Exercises

Sometimes stretching isn’t enough as foot flexibility is key to avoiding pain. Resistance exercises can strengthen your feet and prevent future aching feet by making them stronger. You can try resistance bands or weights to help or even try something simpler such as picking up marbles with your toes or do warm towel stretches.

8. Switch Your Footwear

Your favourite pair of shoes might be the reason your feet are in pain. If you’ve already tried insoles and they don’t work well for you, look for shoes that offer arch support and are the right size. Different types of feet require different kinds of shoes, so make sure to find a pair that cater to your feet.
